• Tested on PC with a RTX 4070... but the game has to turn on a fridge without a tan.

  • I got lost in the loop for almost three hours (for now...)
  • Despite my ice heart, I couldn't kill the princess the first time!

Thus begins our journey: « You're on a path in the woods, and at the end of this path there's a cabin and in the basement of this cabin, there's a princess. ». Ah, autumn and its orange leaves that saw blood, the smell of the loose earth crawling with worms, this earth that, after the first warm rains, releases this singular smell of life and death. The forest walks and its jealously kept secret mushroom stash. In the middle of the woods flows a river. Not far, inside this cabin lives a princess and not just any. This fall we could have chosen to save Peach for the umpteenth time in Super Mario Wonder. But this year is different: to the death of the patriarchate and its archetypes, the developers of Black Tabby Games had the black ideas... and if you were ordered to massacre the princess to save the world, what would you do?

The Stanley Parable Effect

It was in 2011 that The Stanley Parable had crossed the fourth wall as no one had done before in the video game: nor Earthbound, Metal Gear had gone that far. Becoming a reference in the independent environment, this playful UFO closer to a sociological experience than a conventional video game had upset many players by questioning their relationship to the media. In the last decade, no one had really tried to reproduce Galactic Café's master stroke. If you have missed it, you can only be advised to leave this criticism right now to understand for yourself why the game enjoys such a reputation.

With Slay The Princess developed by Black Tabby Games, the ingredients of The Stanley Parable : an omniscient narrator, permanent injunctions and a universe that does not allow itself to be done. Mixing between an endless day and a nightmare tale that Kubin would not have denied, Slay The Princess can also bring its stone to the monumental narrative building that the studio had erected Galactic Café. If the narrator is omnipresent, our character can now choose between several responses to the image of an RPG. This feeling of freedom is quickly captivated by the Ariane thread of history and an unusual dilemma: killing this unknown woman, who is said to be princess, or giving up the Faustian sacrifice intended to save the world.

I would prefer not to...

The connoisseurs of The Stanley Parable know how often free will is only about patterns. By catapulting the player into a universe that seems infinite, Slay The Princess Multiplies the outlook. Whether you're a bloody murderer, rain or skeptic, we all have something of Bartleby, the Melville character with whom the escape turns into a survival device. What if the murder was well-founded? What if this lovely young woman is covering the end of the worlds? Maybe we're touching the best scenario for the next one. Mario Bros. Playing on the duplicity of the murderer and the principal, the dialectic of the master and the slave, the executioner and the victim, Slay The Princess drown the player in a permanent dilemma where none Votes It seems more desirable than the other. History opens up according to the chosen path; the narration unfolds to the image of the unbelievable final Mother by Daren Aronofsky. It is the mechanics of consent that Black Tabby Games detricates until exhaustion.

Slay The Princess as The Stanley Parable recall how much any story is about manipulation, especially when developers break with the narrative pact that tacitly binds the author to its audience. Worn by a particularly convincing British dubbing and a graphic style scratched in black and white, still know that Slay The Princess has not yet been translated into French. Written with a black humour lined with horror, the title pushes sliders without any limits other than the one that the play sets itself. With its narrative in the form of a Möbius ribbon, Slay The Princess savored by the invisible dimension that he knows how to maintain with impertinence. So many games let us see the skeleton of their tree, Slay The Princess is much more perverse. Indomitable and without any horizon other than that of two face-to-face mirrors with as the only escape point: infinity.

That's a good idea. A little trouble with the graphic style, but I will try to get it in the next few days to test for myself!
