67 years after a series of films that revealed to the general public the magnificent Romy Schneider, Austria's Empress's story comes back in great pomp in a German mini-series of 6 episodes that aims to dust the myth of fairy tale.
From the first images, the tone is set: Sissi in her bed gives herself a small lonely pleasure before being abruptly interrupted by her sister. You will understand, so the series will not be a cute little candy shop like the films of the 50s. No, we're looking here at Game of Thrones or Tudors, all proportions kept. From sex, violence, conspiracy and treachery, all the ingredients of the successful shows are there, especially since the director Sven Bohse has the means of his ambitions.
Magnificent natural landscapes, sumptuous scenery, majestic costumes, photo that at times evokes the work of Ridley Scott, Sissi Play the card of the great show and mine of nothing, it makes the retina happy. From the Viennese campaign to the Austrian palaces through various battlefields, the reproduction is convincing and we finally let ourselves be carried by the different journeys of the future Empress.
...without being furious
Wanting to stick to historical reality, Sissi astonishment of premium first by some choices that drastically distance themselves from the original films. A rebellious young girl dreaming of travel and freedom, Sissi (camped by a convincing Dominique Devenport) was, at the beginning, in no way attracted by Emperor François-Joseph (Jannick Schumman and his eternal constipated air), but it was difficult to understand what was driving her into the arms of this man, initially presented to his sister.
If the customs and customs of the monarchy show more « raw » (especially on the issue of sexuality) and unveils the backdrop of the fairy tale promised to the population, the story is far too often flying over to convince completely. Several characters would have deserved more complete treatment.
One thinks in particular of the company lady of Sissi, former prostitute of her husband or even the right hand of the latter, whose loyalty remains unclear. The omnipresence of the mother-in-law is totally erased to make it a character finally friendly and, in the background, the conflict with France, represented by Napoleon 3, was to present us with a mad and bloody emperor but apart from some timoré clashes, nothing really shocking happens before our eyes finally hagards.

Ambitious on paper and wanting to show an influential heroine Sissi, the series turns out to be far too wise to convince completely. If season 2 there is, it will have to be much more controlled and that she does not hesitate to put her feet in the dish permanently!
