A fantasy cinema at the height of a child, with the means of the edge, is the ambition of thisRiddle of Firepresented at the Fortnight of Filmmakers in Cannes. Its recent release in physical format seems to be the ideal opportunity to take a look at it. Beware of the wicked loggers, the strange poachers' sect and salivate the smell of blueberry pie that baked in the oven, and follow these three kids in their mysterious adventures...

Nothing like a great cup of coffee with a slice of huckleberry pie

Three children manage to steal the latest Otomo console. Woe, when they arrive at home they discover with amazement that television is blocked by a parental code. Their hopes to finally discover their new video games are dulled... Yet they manage to convince their mother to give them the code, on one condition: that they cook him a delicious late with blueberry. A simple quest in appearance, which will send them on two dangerous journeys...

The object is super amazing: a film with ambition to create pure fantasy, but with three francs six sous. And this in a purely contemporary world (with smartphone incursions on screen, flat screens or recent cars) but with the outdated grain of Super 16 film. Disturbing, the feature film is very quickly taking. There is a hint ofStand by Me, but without the tragic side, on the contrary, and the simplicity of the quest mingled with the trickulence of the characters they meet make it an exciting pop and contemporary object.

Children's dreams

There is a time when it is enough to proclaim himself a Magi, a witch or a monster to become a Magi. A moment in life where temporality escapes us. Where the gravity of the world has not yet completely taken over you. This is obviously the time of childhood, and this is whatRiddle of Firemanages to transcribe with a certain brilliance. With his ethereal image, clearly dreamlike, the directorWeston Razooliplunges us back into the careless world of childhood. And this makes it a nostalgic film, convoking the colors and smells of childhood, but above all a feature film perfectly accessible to any age.

Where unfortunately the block hurts, it's on the length: an hour forty-nine for this quest for children, it's far too long. Where he would have taken advantage of a format setting him below the hour and a half,Riddle of Fireprefers to get lost in some long circumvolutions and stretch passages that would clearly have gained in intensity if they had been shortened. A tare that doesn't make the film unpleasant – far from there – but that fills it with several unwanted soft stomachs.

ButRiddle of Fireis worth a look, as a nostalgic reminder of these childish dreams that knew how to take care of us so well, as an aesthetically sublime object and pleasant entertainment, both for the little ones and for adults. A unique film, not without flaws, but so singular that it is freely forgiven. And, icing on the blueberry pie, its release in physical format is accompanied by an interview with its director, captured during the Filmmakers' Fortnight.

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
