In 1896, the arrival of a train at the station of La Ciotat, filmed by the Lumière brothers and first projected to the Lyon public, had generated a movement of the crowd back. Almost a century later, the videos of the first surprise reactions of the public experimenting with RV for the first time populate the videos of social networks. Technology once confined to a generation of knowledgeable geeks and technophiles, virtual reality never ceases to surprise. Hot post on the Annecian VR selection and interview with Arnaud Miquel, XR coordinator of the Annecy festival.

The VR at the Annecy Festival

Virtual reality or real fiction?

Since the first helmets promoted by the video game industry, VR experiences are gradually emerging in our daily lives. The VR emerges from the garages of computer pioneers to better root in our homes. Some helmets no longer require support from a powerful PC or even cables to connect. Gradually the technical barrier is being removed. The resolution of the image inflates, the angle of view stretches and the refreshment of images increases; helmets lighten until perhaps soon forget the boundaries between virtual and real. The VR constantly maintains a reflective relationship on itself, even if it questions our perceptions of reality and jostles the grammar of narration. In the VR experiment Goliath Playing with Reality, a simulator Playful schizophreniaOur inner voice perfectly states the paradox of the VR:

« What you see is in the game, what you feel is real. »

Virtual glamour sometimes makes you feel the touch while our senses are shaken in their habits. So many obstacles that require revisiting ways of directing the spectator who became an actor despite him. If the literature could leave clues or generate images and the cinema willingly chooses its camera angles to better reveal, if not hide what matters to it, the VR must also find other ways to target our attention.

Annecy VR stand

A light that arises in the darkness, a noise that makes us turn our head, so much fireworks essential to carry the narration. As in painting, the perspective, layout or contrasts between shadows and lights dear to the dark light guide us to guide the movement. The recent announcement of Sony's PSVR2 shows how the Japanese leader seeks to confirm his role as ambassador in the democratisation of the medium, far from a mere temporary mode. If the helmet fleet is still limited and some megalo billionaires would like to rush us into a dystopic world, where the metaverse coupled with advertising would be a new resource to exhaust, the interest of the VR lies above all in its collaborative artistic dimension.

VR
The head in the clouds...

Halfway between video game and cinema, VR is essentially experimental. It's not always a video game, or a movie itself. It is a polymorphic object that constantly summons the subject's gaze and intervention. The festival of Annecy left the beautiful part to VR works that we could try. Cartoon of Kidnapping in Vostok report To The End of the World Through more conceptual and playful trials, VR shows its plasticity in the approaches adopted.

In addition to a small personal list of the best VR works by Annecy, find our exchange with Arnaud Miquel, XR coordinator of the festival, the opportunity to address the challenges of virtual reality, its challenges and its future.

Our selection of VR works by Annecy

On the Morning you Wake (To the End of The World)

On the Morning you Wake (To the End of The World) is the archetype of successful immersive reporting. On January 13, 2018, all Hawaii receives a text alert « Ballistic missile threat on Hawaii. Buy yourself immediately, this is not an exercise ». By alternating the perspectives of the different citizens of the archipelago who will oscillate between credulity and fear of an imminent strike, this report is a great success. Especially well done and carefully written, To the End of The World, in addition to being perfectly aligned with current events, uses many original and unique narrative levers of the VR.

From the dollhouse effect with remote views, to the 3D maps and dives into the heart of the population's testimonials, these 42 minutes of reportage pass at full speed. Transitions run smoothly and each chapter declines its ideas on the paradox of nuclear deterrence, supposed to maintain world peace. Unless it's a fable? Powerful plea against nuclear folly, To The End of The World was the most successful VR experiment.

Marco & Polo Go Round

While Marco and Polo face difficulties within their cup, the spectator is at the beginning of a household scene that literally challenges the laws of gravity. Writing correctly, the film by Benjamin Steiger Levine is played by the spectator and blind spots. It is with finesse that we let ourselves be fooled by the realization, while elements turn over or appear without our knowledge. Funny and well written, Marco & Polo Go Round We were also seduced by its pastel style like a watercolor that would come to life in real time.

Kidnapping in Vostok

KidnApping to Vostok was the humor-masted cartridge of the festival. Baroque cartoon, where two Russian scientists kidnapped a scientist in order to bring him to an interrogation, this French short film by Jean Bouthors played the overbidding with two inspired Soviet cartoons. These nickel-plated feet will multiply the failures, while we assite -ligote- to all their misadventures. More classical in the approach to the fact that the spectator is necessarily motionless and only turns his head around him, it was still a pleasant moment that shows that the cartoon does well with the VR.

Goliath Playing With Reality

Goliath Playing With Reality is clearly the VR work that is closest to the video game. « After a decade of isolation in psychiatric institutions, Jon, a man with paranoid schizophrenia, finds his salvation in online video games. » Designed as a reflection on the relationship to fiction, Goliath Playing With Reality chain gameplay sequences and virtual trainings with an original narrative background. Simple but efficient, Goliath Playing with Reality recalls how simple concepts can fly when writing is good bill.
