Live from FEFFS, express return on the Haitian action comedy Kidnapping Inc. presented in the crossovers competition. And crossovers it is discussed in this feature film juggling with references and whose very words mingle with the sordid realities of filming!
The brute, the other brute and the crook
Two gangsters meet with the son of the future Haitian president in their trunk, on the eve of the elections. And the boy is worth his heavy gold: we put his head at a price at more than 300,000 US dollars! Problem: they accidentally kill their hostage before they can even claim their ransom... Then begins an endless day for these two unlucky lascars.
For his first feature film, we understand from the outset that Bruno Mourral Don't want to that Do a simple act comedy. Even before the foreground, a carton is placed Kidnapping Inc. in the Haitian context: the first independent black country, it has since the crisis of 2018 increasingly affected by rampant crime, obviously induced by exacerbated poverty. In 2021, more than 1,000 kidnappings were recorded... A lucrative business described in the film, which takes its feet in a reality that goes beyond its own fiction. Indeed, several members of the team will be kidnapped during the shooting...
Pulp fiction Creole
And let's go straight ahead: Kidnapping Inc. will not be a visual slap of every moment. Photography is sometimes doubtful, changes in image regime not always well carried out and the duration of the feature film induces some unwanted soft stomachs. But after spitting out our snot of insatiable criticism, recognize it anyway: Kidnapping Inc. is quite entertaining and has its place in a festival like the FEFFS!
Spread of references oscillating between Pulp Fiction and The City of God, the feature film aligns the comedic situations often hilarious, interspersed with scenes of action more or less successful, but always rhythmic (in particular a parallel montage of birth in the street and a goal of Messiah that allows to situate the feature film in its madness). The cascade of misfortunes that hit our two lascars constantly renews the storytelling of the film, which allows itself to break up quite attractive tone.
Anyway, you'll understand, Kidnapping Inc. is as fun as it is entertaining. If the project is technically lame, it has the audacity to bring the Creole sounds into the theaters, to develop a serious discourse on the state of the country in a film with the ambitions of great entertainment and to offer sacred slices of fun. And for all this, it's worth a look! A staggered discovery of FEFFS to discover soon (we hope) in the rooms...
Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.

That movie looked funky!
Well funny, after the quality of what we saw at the FEFFS was not the most memorable unfortunately...
