During the 1930s Foshan became the capital of martial arts. The city's schools attract ever-increasing numbers of followers from all over China, but there is no sign of Ip Man's level of excellence. A specialist in Wing Chung boxing, this legendary master trained Bruce Lee.

Best historical martial art film in recent years, the first part of the mythical saga inspired by the biography of Yip Man, Grand Master of Wing Chun and mentor of Bruce Lee, accepts the challenge of moving to UHD.

As with previous versions, the patinated filter with unsaturated sepia hues (less pronounced on the BD HK) and intrusive granularity is still required. Like the improvement of the edges, nevertheless better controlled here, as well as the presence of some trailing movements. In short, the « defects » integrated into the DI for years are still present in Foshan, and do not necessarily lend themselves well to the 4K... even if it is true that the details have made a leap forward (while preserving the cinematic softness of the photograph) and that the HDR greatly improves the contrasts (especially the shadows) and the reflections of the light sources.

Taking advantage of the height channels when the narration demands it and taking advantage of a completely different weight when the action occurs, the new soundtrack Dolby Atmos continues to benefit from regular rear activity and the aeration of the sublime score of Kenji Kawai.

Ip Man 2 - The return of the Grand Master

Ip Man - La Saga

Taking place shortly after the events of the first opus, the saga of Grand Maître Yip Man continues with this very good romantic entertainment to the masterful combat scenes.

More contrasting and colourful (more vivid shades thanks to the WCG), the image of this suite nevertheless suffers from a small improvement of contours, there also present for years, but fortunately more contained in 4K... especially since there is here a small gap on the side of the definition. Slightly granular (the video noise of the HD transfer has disappeared), it gains in brilliance and depth due to the presence of HDR technology.

Restored with passion (cf. the BO signed Kenji Kawai), the soundtrack offers a new Dolby Atmos mix that is more immersive (the atmospheres are more active) and rich in acoustic activity (the appearance of vertical effects) than its consoeurs encoded in DTS-HD MA. As for the bass, they are still as powerful and striking.

Ip Man 3

Ip Man - La Saga

Artistic note : 7 // Video quality : 8.5 // Audio quality : 9

Disappointing vis-à-vis its elderly, even if successful, this film of action with the old visually cared manages to counter the meagreness of its stakes (finally more intimate) by the quality of its confrontations (cf. the virtuosity of the final duel). Will it be the same for this UBD?

Captured digitally and not in silver 35 mm like the first two episodes, the images are more « clean » and precise. More daring in UHD HDR, they show increased details, intensified vintage colors and more biting light sources. However, despite the improved contrasts, some blacks seem to lack depth.

Far from the apathetic soundtrack proposed by the French Blu-ray (which is more shamefully not HD!), the Dolby Atmos mixing of this edition is identical to his colleague DTS:X present on the US BD... That is, dynamic and immersive with clarity of every moment, extensive spatialization and physical bass.

This very romantic historical drama at spectacular martial games is a farewell to the master who wets his shirt in 4K Ultra HD.

Revealed from a very impressive overall transfer that allows the image to defeat its HD counterpart (more refined textures, warmer pastel colors with new nuances, richer contrasts and brighter light sources), and from an energetic soundtrack that does not lack punch or height (cf. falling debris during the earthquake), the technical merits of the record are great... especially that French subtitles have registered for the tournament!

« We are master of our destiny, each one chooses its own path. »

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
