• Early access
  • Tested via code provided by Terminals.io, always in the right moves to give visibility to the independents
  • First opinion after eight hours on the counter! There is already something to do with content
  • The music track below does not come from the game, for the hour little represented on the streaming music platforms, but from the fantastic Deepstar Six (Aquatic Mutant in Liberty in VF) that I recommend to lovers of nanars with a soul, those that make you both laugh and shiver

▼ukasz Kałuski defines Hidden Deep as a game of exploration/action taking place in a universe of science fiction/horror. Based in Warsaw, this lonely veteran developer of the Amiga era and James Cameron's lover claims the influences ofAliens and The Thing on its project. Manette in hand, we see a sharp crossing between the appropriation of the land of the mythical series of Women and organic physics Half-Life. Now that the presentations are made, inspire a big blow and let's get together in the dark abyss of this anticipated access...

Terror under the hadal zone

Intrigue Hidden Deep occurs in caves 1.6 km below the floor of an unknown ocean. Following the capture of anomalies by their measuring instruments, a first team of scientists is sent to the site to conduct the investigation. Almost two years of research flow until the day the radio link suddenly breaks... What happened? It's up to you, head of the rescue team, to find out.

The first contact with the game - which Čukasz Kałuski defines as « the biggest project of his life »- is striking. Inertia of movements, felt mass transfers or this almost tangible sensation of concrete grinding of piles of pixels when the ground is destroyed: Hidden Deep stands out immediately thanks to its high-flying physical motor. Imagine that almost all elements of this attractive 2D title are subject to the laws of gravity and kinetic energy.

In this way, the majority of soils can be drilled by means of a load of C4, as would be the case in Women armed with a hammer or banana (the real ones will know). You will never excavate at random! You will need to use several tools, including a useful topographic scanner to detect the air pockets hidden under your feet.

Hidden Deep
The use of explosives is essential to progress.

With each situation its approach: you have spotted a dark tunnel but the disgusting gargouillis that come from it make you reconsider the company? Send a floating sphere as a scout to discover what he's hiding! It can even electrocute possible enemies matted in darkness, or even trigger mechanisms. Un-dis-pen-sable.

The flying spheres evoke the futuristic technology of Ridley Scott's film Prometheus.

The return of the ninja rope

You will also find gear to fly and operate in order to achieve your goals, which will always be communicated to you at the beginning of the levels. It is at this point that the game reveals its puzzle dimension by allowing us to control alternatively several protagonists with distinct skills. Our main character can use some tools but is unable to drive a bridge building machine? Then one of our engineers is taken to perform the construction task and then another worker is taken to transport the machine over a precipice. Beware of swinging the nacelle during these high-voltige sequences during which we hold our breath and exclaim foolishly, worried that our means of drilling does not fall into vacuum.

Speleology requires you to constantly use your grapple. This is the equivalent of the ninja rope of Women. Its range is immense and you can either use it to reach spaces inaccessible otherwise, or as a reminder rope along which to climb, descend or swing, or like a zipline. It will be your main accessory and, again, beware of the laws of physics when you are slamming yourself under penalty of seeing your gus blow up the skull against the wall of the cave, in a gerbe of blood of the most beautiful effect.

Note that the game over allows you to observe your body for a few seconds post mortem, which gives rise to crazy scenes where we admire our inert body bounce until finally touch the bottom of the crevice in a deaf noise, like a disarticulated puppet. Take a look at this compilation of my biggest chess to better understand what I'm talking about!

The Thing

Hidden Deep also has an action/horror dimension, without making it a survival horror That's all. You are not alone in these galleries... Lombrics human pulpit eaters, venous spider-crabs and other mid-lasagne half-drosophilic flying filth will regularly get in your way. Generous in ammunition, lives and with almost instant checkpoints, the early access of the game is a pleasure. The games against the monsters are successful but are more there to feed the claustrophobic atmosphere as possible rather than to pose real problems (at least in the first 6 levels, to see what will be in the final version). Fighting is quite frequent and is a good rhythm for our exploration, for a title that can also focus on more solitary sequences when necessary.

One tentacle can hide another...

Awhen it is still only in advance access, Hidden Deep already hit hard and emits a greying impression of « Never played ». With its 2D universe in underground huis-closing, its agonizing sound atmosphere, its organico-deguelable bestioles but above all thanks to its physical motor and its ingenious riddles that need to excavate the meninges by assigning each of our characters to a specific task, the title of Kałuski clearly has the potential to mark the independent scene at its release. Case to follow!
