WORK – Hell's reboot?

Here comes Hellboy, the superhero with red skin and cut horns, straight from hell. Within a secret unity, he struggles alongside humans to preserve the balance of the universe. A thousand years after his defeat against King Arthur, Nimue, the Queen of Blood, returned from the dead and raised an army of demons to plunge the world into darkness. Hellboy and his shock team are engaged in a Titan fight for our survival.

While David Harbour's performance is surprisingly imposing itself, that contemporary action scenes are chaining at a staggering pace and that the whole is more faithful to Mike Mignola's work, this fantasy-horrific reboot openly more gore (it is very clearly a B series with a big budget) lacks relief and proves to be much less inventive (but more serial) than the more extensive and poetic versions of Guillermo del Toro. From the inside are fioriture.

IMAGE – Again and again

Increased details throughout (precision of make-up, fabrics and decors is significantly improved), increased depth of field, significantly richer and nuanced colours (especially red, orange and yellow hues), more dynamic contrasts (whites are brighter and darker) for better demarcation of shade zones (see inside Baba Yaga's home), and more intense light sources (sword inflamed, daylight, artificial lighting).

SOUND – Hard Rock Forever

Rather impressive despite a certain lack of safe (!), the VO Dolby Atmos delivers a particularly attractive maelstrom of sound effects and/or ambiance. Spatialization is neat, the activity around it is remarkable, the air scene is often used (debs falling, voices from across the world, echoes, monsters and j-en pass), the score enveloping and the voices always clear.

Less fun and more reserved, the VF is no less combative.

CONCLUSION – New look for a new life?

More violent and vulgar with lots of battles and ugly monsters, this new adaptation of the eponymous comics published by Dark Horse avoids being reduced to ashes thanks to a 4K Ultra HD edition that sets the fire!

Hellboy (2019)

Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
