20 years (!) after his last film Infidel (remake of The Unfaithful Woman by Claude Chabrol), Adrian Lyne, director of culture 9 Weeks 1⁄2, Flashdance, Fatal link and the masterpiece Jacob's Scale, back behind the camera for an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel: Deep Water (Deep water in VF), or an affluent couple allowing extramarital relationships sees their lives swing when several lovers disappear around them. Privately released in theaters because of VOCID-19, the film is purchased by Amazon for streaming on Premium Video.

Fatal infidel link

For his return behind the camera, probably reinvigorated by the indecent success of Fifty shades of Grey (which owes much to 9 Weeks 1⁄2), Adrian Lyne does not get off the beaten track by proposing an erotic thriller that had earned him his greatest successes. The problem is that instead of accentuating the thriller side as it was the Gone Girl of David Fincher and sow trouble, Deep water puts your feet in the dish, sacrificing its suspense (maigre) on the altar of the wanderings of a dysfunctional couple to which it is difficult to attach.

Bobos sheltered from need, surrounded by friends with retarded behaviors, one follows with boredom their very dull and loveless relationship, especially since the character interpreted by Ana de Armas is absolutely unbearable. By his side, Ben Affleck brings all his charisma to this character at once destroyed and blasphemed by his wife's behavior. Much more complex which seems, the interpreter of the Batman of Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman) shows his own faults as in a short scene where his fight against alcohol is briefly mentioned.

Fifty Nuances of Thriller

Unfortunately, the thriller part is completely vented. A non-existent thought that leaves no doubt about the culprit, characters who disappear from the plot without knowing too much why (which of the first victim, the private detective?) until a spectacular final (surprisingly wanted by the production) that makes us (slightly) get out of our torpor, the film is spoiled by a realization without genius, where the digital imaging of the cameras does not sit war at the foot of the filmmaker 80s despite some flight: Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas have never been so beautiful and sensual, the camera taking the time to film them like art works.

« Why are you the only man who wants to stay with me? »

Weared by his star couple, Deep water is a failed return for Adrian Lyne, proof of this is that the revival of the 1980s is not systematically sign of success.

Biberned very early at the cinema, I swallowed film like others green berets at breakfast! Curious of everything and today casanier in the soul, it is in the sweet atmosphere of the home that I quench my thirst without limit of 7th art.
