Greatly funny and terrifying festival film at once, Deadstream debunks in France directly on Shadowz's horrific cinema platform for Halloween evening, the opportunity to come back to this refreshing found footage.
Smile, you're filmed!
It is genres in cinema that it is increasingly difficult to renew. Or at least to keep alive. But within the horror, the sub-genre that seems the most eccentric is probably that of found footage, or in good French « The recording found ». Even if the term may not tell you anything, you have necessarily already looked at it: very popular Blair Witch Project sulphur dioxide Cannibal HolocaustIt is available in all forms and formats. And because: it is probably the easiest subgenre to master for a pennyless shooting. All you have to do is a common camera, a bunch of friends, and now a project can come into being.
And in horror, we have had our dose: the whole Spanish decline of REC, Paranormal activity, scare by Zoom in time of pandemic with the Host Rob Savage's sketch movies V/H/S until the very recent V/H/S/99, and all that sometimes until the overdose. Then inside this ultra-marked subgenus appears Deadstream (2022). Scheduled at several European festivals, then found on the American horror platform Shudder and, here in Halloween on Shadowz in France, it is the new-born couple of directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter.
Stream until the end of the night
History is simple. A YouTubeur in disgrace (interpreted by Joseph Winter in person) tries to re-establish his reputation in streamer inside a « True » haunted house, not without great reinforcements of sponsors and product placements. Unfortunately for him, the night will not really go as planned...
Deadstream fun with codes specific to « Ghost hunters » that haunt YouTube's closets to lay us a real Masterclass humor and tension that does not hesitate to push sliders far, far away. The filming device is simple: a few GoPros arranged in the different rooms of the house, the main actor who walks through its glaucous corridors and a chat where the different viewers communicate.
jokes, fleeting appearances, lots of out-of-fields, false fears and a brilliant use of everything the support can offer them, Deadstream does not exempt the viewer from any time dead.
A horrific comedy
First thanks to humor, which has no trouble to take. Probably on one side thanks to the comic tempo of the great Joseph Winter, but also because this story of deprebated greedy merchandising making the clown in a so-called haunted house sounds (sorry?) just.
But where Deadstream Tap hard, it is that his omnipresent malice never evacuates terror, unlike the good majority of current horrific comedy. The dreadful moments rivet you at your seat and give you the trick. The festival viewing, in a crowded room, allowed us to see this strange transition between the moments of general hilarity and a palpable tension that made the audience's teeth gnashing.
Deadstream is a highly didactic film, very well conducted, which explores all that its meagre means have to offer in terms of staging and creation. A horrific comedy that doesn't forget to make you laugh, or to be very scary, probably one of the ideal movies to see between friends for Halloween evening. And the desire to discover what this film couple – Joseph and Vanessa Winter – can lay on us later, starting with one of the segments of the V/H/S/99 which we mentioned a little earlier. Deadstream is available tonight to celebrate Halloween as it should.
Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
