Event at the Annecy festival, the presence of Rintarō allowed us to discover his next film Nezumikozō Jirokichi. At the age of 92, the master to whom one owes Metropolis, Galaxy Express or Harmagedon realizes a dream with this short film tribute to the silent film. Since it is not every day that one of the sponsors of Japanese animation can meet, we share the public conversation that took place at the end of this highly privileged session.

Presented as a special attention to director Sadao Yamanaka, who died at the age of 29 during the Manchuria War, Nezumikozō Jirokichi Don't miss boldness. Worn by jazzy music composed by Toshiyuki Honda (Advocate, Metropolis), the OST enjoys a singular character that blends beautifully with this range of felt colours where night blue dominates. Mami Koyama Dr. Slump) also gives his voice as a narrator. The wait of the panels of the replicas of the protagonists also participates on the retro side of this investigation.
Memory of our fathers
This short film plays on two levels: on the one hand, the film depicts Sadao Yamanaka's efforts to produce Nezumi kozō Jirokichi: Edo no maki in 1933. On the other hand, he plunges us into the film itself, in the city of Edo, where Jirokichi, nicknamed Nezumikozo (the Rat) wanders on the roofs. This Japanese avatar by Robin des bois takes a clever pleasure in robbing the rich to give back to the poor, until the day when yakuzas set him a trap to reveal his true identity. On the battlefield where he was sent during the war, Sadao Yamanaka, to whom this film is dedicated, wrote in his diary:
« I would be a little sad if 'poor humans and paper balloons' were my last work. »
In an interview with the magazine CatsukaRintarô answers him today: « If I can give him this little movie, then I'd be a little happy. ». Let us, too, rejoice because this tribute in Russian dolls will not remain a prisoner of festivals. It will be an event in the theater in the fall, which will delight fans!
