Stuck between a Black Crab and a second season of Bridgerton Chronicle, Windfall (Title in VO) almost passed under the radars, especially since the horrific presentation image available on the platform allowed to fear a comedy low from the forehead, just like his casting more quickly to make the guignols in front of the camera...
It was not to mention director Charlie McDowell, author of a The Discovery already for Netflix, and one of the writers: Andrew Kevin Walker. More known to be behind scripts of Seven, 8 mm or the wonderful Sleepy Hollow, the duo (helped by one of the main actors, Jason Segel) shape the story altogether all banal of a « burglar » entering the secondary residence of a wealthy couple thinking there would be no one. The arrival of the owners will cause the situation to deteriorate.
It's not Arsène Lupin who wants
DFrom the beginning, the influence of a certain Alfred Hitchcock is hovering on the credits, thanks to his music and his fixed plans followed by slow journeys showing us the magnificent house surrounded by orange trees (mind subtle eye to the director's father, Malcom McDowell, star of... Mechanical orange).
Filmed in full confinement, which gives a whole other flavor to this paradisiacal place, without danger, where evil will slowly simmer to a point of no return, Impacts Surprised by its sober realization and offbeat tone.
Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) burglar, often left-handed and improvising his taking hostages, tends to make us smile, especially as his prisoners blow him the method to apply so that everything goes smoothly!
Climbing of terror
Mthe more time passes and the more the personalities of this trio (which will never be named in the film) will reveal themselves, transforming the lightness of the beginning into closed-door tension. Starting with the jailer (Segel, therefore, both clumsy and icy) who is perhaps not there by chance, to the husband (excellent Jesse Plimons), a businessman detestable at all points and to his wife, stifled by the behaviour of the latter who will find in this trial the strength to emancipate.
In the role of the said wife, there is an amazing Lilly Collins (daughter of Phil Collins and wife of the director; you will thank me in front of the coffee machine !) far away from his childish minauderie dEmily in Paris. Beautifully directed, all in subtlety, his personality grows as the (short) duration of the film (1h32) progresses to a surprising end; the day making way for the night, the paradise making way for hell!

Can money buy everything? McDowell answers this question while posing problems of class struggle, psychological violence of the strongest on the weakest or of the place of women in society.
Mine of nothing, we did not expect such a cinematographic outfit from this film as full of qualities as the oranges surrounding the house! A nice surprise.
Biberned very early at the cinema, I swallowed film like others green berets at breakfast! Curious of everything and today casanier in the soul, it is in the sweet atmosphere of the home that I quench my thirst without limit of 7th art.
