WORK - Endless ride
Abel Davos is wanted by all police in the world. After a last holdup in Italy, while trying to return to France, his wife and accomplice were killed by customs officers. Having managed to escape with his two sons, he asked for help from former Parisian accomplices.
Inspired by the authentic story of the cold-blooded killer "Mammouth", this first-class polar with absolute darkness and the legendary duo (the gravity of the Lino Ventura and lightness of Jean-Paul Belmondo, for the first time gathered) unfolds its intrigue dedicated to the psychology of its characters in a neo-realistic atmosphere where the hieratism sum all Melvillian manifests itself here and there. Admirably holed and devoid of sensitivity, this classic by too unknown of Claude Saulet (his first official essay) can be his greatest success.
« We have to come right now... with an ambulance or something. »
IMAGE - When men fall
Initiated by TF1 Studio with the help of CNC, of OCS and Corner of Mire Cinema, this new 4K restoration carried out by Lighting Classics in 2023 (from the original negative) unfolds in a UHD Dolby Vision transfer (or HDR10+ depending on your hardware) to solid encoding (unlike its HD counterpart) even if a plane leaves a macroblocking in the sky.
Particularly sharp and perfectly cleaned, the image of exemplary stability shows an increased finesse against the Blu-ray (to the lesser definition and the dark areas too compressed) with a desired organic silver patina and a clearly enhanced level of detail (the faces of the actors, the textures of the clothes and the backgrounds in the background). As of course, quality declines during chained melts (a defect intrinsic to the work).
As for the photo of the chief operator Ghislain Cloquet, it gains in flamboyance by a more nuanced calibration where the grey palette is richer and contrasts otherwise denser (without any excess) than in the past. Indeed, the blacks display with an unprecedented penetrance on this title and the whites, with the purity noted, give a surplus of brightness to the light sources.
SOUND - Black is black 🎶
Made in DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono, this size restoration (a complete cleaning) with a crystalline rendering is to endure neither breath nor distortion. The voices accuse a beautiful presence (without whistling or saturation) despite slightly backward post-synchronized passages (because a little deaf), the music signed Georges Delerue is well done, the effects as well as the atmospheres are not lacking in precision, the dynamics are appreciable and the beaches of silence are obvious transparency. In fact, a real acoustic comfort operates.
CONCLUSION - End of the race
To be discovered in ★ The Meeting ★ The best French polar of the 60s is delivered to us in a digitpack 4K Ultra HD event (with 3,000 copies) where the A/V performances are ultra-handled and the interactivity is rather complete (a pre-program that can or may not be included in the film's viewing, a presentation by Julien Comelli and new cut scenes). Nice work.
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
