Diekat is one of the few short films that caught our attention in Brussels. With its disturbing atmosphere and oppressive atmosphere, each plan is won by mystery. The photograph with blue tones and the discreet projections of rope instruments question the spectator. Are we in a school or asylum? Presented at the short film festival BSFF, we had the pleasure of talking with Michiel Venmans, a young Belgian director whom we will not fail to follow in the future.

"Uncomfortable Laugh"

The opening scene in just seconds manages to hold the spectator in breath. Children pop up on the screen, one by one, and look out the window as if they were contemplating the freedom they were denied. Michiel Venmans goes back to the origins of Diekat and how he managed to create this discomfort that immediately wins us. Obey or suffer: a pivotal question at the age when the child creates his own references. Between puberty and childhood, the young man builds his landmarks and becomes his own narrator. From the first moments of DiekatOne recognizes the voice of a child who remembers an old story. Like the chewing gum that it chews and guesses in front of this black and opaque screen, it gradually models its memory, unless it is a dream. Gasoline Diekat its origin is the experience of Michiel Venmans, on his relationship to creation and original transgression.

« When I was in school, I had a friend and we had the same secret book. And every day we wrote stories about our teachers, about the other kids. It was about murder, sex, shit! »

Michiel Venmans

Michiel Venmans lives in Brussels where he is a film director. After his master's degree at the RITCS, he makes numerous music clips for the artists he loves. His film Diekat was presented at the Brussels short film festival BSFF in competition Next Generation. Among his mentors, Michiel Venmans admires the work of Michael Haneke and in particular on white ribbon, one of the sources of inspiration for his short film Diekat. A person willingly inclined to black humour and a certain lascivious self-inflictedness, Michiel Venmans likes to marry a form of laughter to strangeness that goes through all his work.

The Bathing director

Michiel Venmans also likes to fall behind his alter ego, "The Bathing Director" and anagram of his name Leichim Mansven which is sometimes found in the credits of his films. In mirror of his work, the young director likes to think that it is his avatar that created him and not the reverse. An assertive duality, where it is true, the character stands alongside the Man during our Brussels interview. « People often don't understand. Now they may understand.» Did he conclude an interview with the magazine? Subbacultcha. At 26 years old, Michiel Venmans is certainly one of the directors to follow closely in the new Belgian guard!
