First feature film by Serbian Milica Tomović, Celts (Kelti) was presented at the Brussels International Film Festival. Portrait of the post-USSR period of the early 1990s, the film has a scent of nostalgia. It all starts on an evening shown from two different angles: that of the children who celebrate the birthday of one of their own and that of the parents who exchange around a drink in the kitchen during turbulent reunions. Two worlds, two atmospheres!

An intimate social eight-closure

There are several narrative figures, from the young revolutionary punk, idealist freshly converted to the English teacher and playwright from the bourgeoisie. All will exchange, sometimes with complicity, sometimes on a bed of rivalry and adultery. Kelti embraces all generations in this same house from another time. Designed as a mirror of the director's memories, the film is a window on the past. Milica Tomović was inspired by her own experience and childhood memories. Everything is filmed in the shoulder with subtle camera movements that allow to slide from one piece to another, from the universe of children to that of parents, each being perfectly hermetic, yet all participate in the same party.

The director confided to be inspired by her personal photographs, which is probably felt in the authenticity of the scenes up to the grain of the photograph that recalls silver. Unit of time and place participate here in the fidelity and intimacy of the family portrait prepared by the director. In an interview given at the Berlinade in 2021, Milica recalled her original narrative intent: « The idea was to treat my childhood and adult life simultaneously by locking them in one house and one day ». A rather successful bet despite a last third that might have won to show more narrative stakes. Nevertheless, it is a promising first feature film for the future of this young Serbian director, who will be followed at future festivals.
