WORK - Legend of the reggae
Celebrate the life and music of an icon that inspired generations with his message of love, peace and unity. Find out how Bob Marley has overcome adversity and how his revolutionary music has changed the world.
Co-produced by the singer's family, this surface biography that focuses its spotlight on a pivotal period (1976-78) of the prophet of reggae and rastafarism is certainly respectful of his inspiring artist (interpreted by a Kingsley Ben-Adir convincing), but cruelly lacks fever and depth to rise beyond mere promo operation far too satisfied of itself. Because while the joyous militant songs of his world star continue to vibrate, this intimate portrait of man and artist overshadows the political context of the time, touches on the mystical dimension of the movement « rasta » and locks in a form far too clean. Yeah man, it could have been much better!
« We can't separate the music from the message. »
IMAGE - From spleen to spliff
Result of a 4.6K digital capture (with ARRI ALEXA 35 cameras) finalized in 4K, the slightly vintage and enchanting photograph of the chief operator Robert Elswit dies the screen in UHD Dolby Vision despite some diet drops (a shift handle but no trace of tingling) due to an average bitrate a little just 51.5 Mbit/s.
The level of definition is notable, the details are even more eloquent than in 1080p (facial hairiness, dreadlocks, textile fibres, Jamaican landscapes) and the clarity is just remarkable.
The most often warm colorimetric palette increases in vibrance (see the yellow/orange shades in the Caribbean and blue/grey in Europe), contrasts are reinforced by denser unblocked blacks and light sources, of which the Peak Nits Average has been measured at 261 cd/m2 and the MaxCCL at 479 nits, show increased intensity (scenario spots, solar lighting and sifted atmospheres of recording studios).
SON - All in One
Beautifully mixed, this Dolby Atmos soundtrack available in VO (16-bit, 3577 kbps) as in VF (16-bit, 3574 kbps) delivers an acoustic scene as rich as it is immersive where iconic pieces of Bob Marley Give the rhythm.
The dynamic unfolds without sunk, the concerts as well as the rehearsals place us in the middle of instruments and voices with a precision of goldsmith, the mobilization of the canals is efficient throughout (urban atmospheres, the screams of the crowd) even if the verticality is only passing (the fireworks, the planes and the feeling of enveloping during the shows), the dialogues show a beautiful clarity and the channel LFE, an admirable expressivity, strengthens the interaction between the bass (the lung) and the battery (the heart).
Apart from the dubbing (well incorporated but sometimes at the border of the parody), there is no difference between the two sound tracks.
CONCLUSION - Forever Loving Jah
While the reggae king's music is eternal, this biographical drama about one of the most influential singers in the world is sadly wise and playwrightly impersonal to revive the legend. But Jah be praised, the 4K Ultra HD has good vibes. Yeah man, it's good!
Nyctalope like Riddick and with a very good hearing, I am ready to jump on physical editions and SVOD platforms. But if the quality isn't on the rendezvous, stop at the bite! #WeLovePhysicalMedia
