WORK – Welcome to Beast Age
Meilin Lee is a 13-year-old girl, confident, but drawn between her image as a model girl in the eyes of her super-protective mother and the chaos of adolescence. And as if all the changes that occur in her were not enough, every time she is overwhelmed by her emotions – which, for a teenager, happens almost all the time – she turns into a giant red panda!
Technically fabulous (graphics all in roundness) and overflowing with energy, this metaphorical fable about the teenage crisis (and the emotions that go with it) is a somewhat brazen animated film where tenderness, humour and sorority (the three somewhat crazy friends of Meilin) help to evoke motherly and cultural transmission. In the mid-2000s, a breath of fresh air.
IMAGE – What a beautiful fur!
More luminous, pop and refined than on Blu-ray, this life-filled image is even more catchy with this UHD HDR10 transfer.
The textures are significantly finer (the characters, the backgrounds), the colorimetric palette with pastel tones is otherwise deeper (the primary ones are shown with more intensity), the contrasts are much more deluge (the blacks are deeper and the whites are clearer) and the light sources easily dazzling (the spectral appearances of Sun Yee, the moon, the projectors at the concert of the 4*Town).
SON – Nobody Like U
Typical of Disney, the VO Dolby Atmos is a little too relaxed (with bass in retreat, neglected dynamics and measured recording volume) for its own good. But it offers with happiness a pleasant spatial directivity, well-defined effects and/or atmospheres, an abundant rear scene, clear dialogues, reasonably designed sound verticality (atmospheres, some occasional sounds and musical atmosphere) and a carefully ventilated score on both sides of the listening room.
Far from holding back as much, the VF(Q) Dolby Digital More 7.1 has a much more punchy character despite a slightly less spatialization « Dressed » Hey!
CONCLUSION – All hairy?
For the use of young girls, but not only, in the midst of pubertal transformations, the red panda is a pivotal step to reveal oneself and emancipate... Especially as surrounded by the present 4K Ultra HD, all the lights are green (except the reloud buddy) « Dolby Atmouse » However, we still love to do so without too much anger, sadness and/or shame.
