It is a Spanish proposal passed through the Annecy box which is about to land in physical format: Detective Sun and the curse of the black widow. Back on this strange eight-legged whodunit in a review adapted to the most arachnophobic of our readers!

Hercules Poirot in the land of a thousand feet

Famous eight-legged Hercules Poirot, Inspector Sun (with the voice of doubler Philippe Allard) embarks on a seaplane after putting his Nemesis under locks. If he finally thought he could rest, an open-air murder forced him to throw himself back into an investigation full of twists.

Julio Soto Gurpide is a director navigating between the US and Spain, but also a big hit! Telefilm, animation, cinema films, ranging from spectrum to spectrum and oscillating as much between pure drama as thriller or documentary, he tries everything. In 2017, he explored animal animation with his Deep, a post-human history of abyss inhabited by strange creatures.

The film that interests us today, Inspector Sun, signs his return to animation. Placed in 1930 with all the codes of the black film and its archetypes (the malicious policeman, the fatal woman, the psychopath killer), he did not forget to make a film accessible to the smallest, taking from end to end by its humorous projections and its multiplication of intrigues and false-tracks.

Arachnophile film

After the much too cute Lucas the Spider, Inspector Sun again attack the spider figure not as a repulsive or dangerous element, but as a pivot (and positive) character of the plot. A good first point for the movie!

And if he struggles to compete with the maestria of his predecessors and classics – typically the matrix 1001 legs -, he has the audacity to venture into an intrigue that is little cleared, with characters rarely seen elsewhere who, coupled with particularly worked decorations (an Art Deco infused with Asian influences), make forget the small technical imperfections inherent in a 3D animated film of this economy. This is, therefore, enough to distinguish it from competition and make it an interesting milestone in European animation for a young audience.

« 1001 legs », a classic after which « Inspector Sun ».

In short, Detective Sun and the widow's curse black is certainly a beautiful surprise that is intended primarily for a young audience. Neither revolutionary nor technically impeccable, he has for him bold in his offbeat tone and his proposal emerging from the beaten path... And it's already a lot!

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
