Verdict
With its pure arcade feeling and torrential rains of dumplings that have nothing to envy to Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun, Returnal is a bold and uncompromising proposition. Housemarque's latest birthday is a veritable beacon in the AAA ocean, whose ever more expensive developments discourage publishers from taking creative risks too often, for fear of cutting themselves off from part of the public. Classic in its mechanics but devilishly effective in its associations of ideas: Returnal succeeds in extricating itself from the repetition inherent in its genre of rogue-lite by offering licked, merciless and especially different gameplay loops from one side to another thanks to a procedural algorithm and unpredictable battles that will push you into your entrenchments. Demanding but still permissive, the game is only rarely frustrating for as long as you bother to tame your mechanics. The player emerges from every failure and one never feels a feeling of injustice, often synonymous with a poorly dosed difficulty. With Returnnal, the developers of Housemarque prove that they are able to reach the stars and useless to specify that MaG will follow their next project not yet unveiled with curiosity.
