The story of a mad love, confined to a summer, and its consequences that resonate even more than thirty years later...

When you're 17...

When you're 17... It's a movieAndré Téchinérelated themes. It is also the age of Stéphane and Thomas. A near-scale approach to a life, yet their love story, in the summer of the eighties, is still driving today. Adapting Philippe Besson's autobiographical novel, Stop lying is meant to be a cross hunt between this summer and the present. A solar summer, narrate their nascent passion. And a dull, dull present, where the same Stéphane (Guillaume de Tonquédec), become famous writer, returns to his native region to sponsor a brand of cognac. Everything turns to Lucas' appearance (Victor Belmondo), the son of his lover of a summer, disappeared without leaving any trace.

Stop lying is built in constant cross-hunting, where flashbacks pulsate like impalpable, pure, joyous reminiscences, always crossed by the bright colors of summer and where exploding sex incartades never sweetened. On the contrary, the present is meant to be wretched, stuck between the conventions of usage, the unchanging rituals (meetings with the public, autograph sessions, conference), lost in the spectrum of autumn colours. As soon as Lucas appeared, incarnated by a Victor Belmondo whose features offer the spitty portrait of the father – what the film evokes in a scene – the everyday routine is flickering. The story is more tragic, the film becomes a night weather, faces close and voices rise in a tone.

Illuminant

The greatest strength ofStop lying.,it's not to get over in the pathos. Certainly the autobiographical story of the writer Philippe Besson, whose adaptation is intended to be faithful, involves tragic, but the director Olivier Peyon focus on the bright side of the story. And even when the scenes get dizzy, he manages not to make them plump – thanks to the awesome Guilaine Londez.

Stop lying

Yet, the feature film suffers from several shortcomings. First of all, casting: if it remains more than coherent, it is not always served by its sometimes too much written dialogues, ringing at times next to the stage interpreted. As for the music, signed Thylacin, it must be noted that as brilliant as the band, it remains very identified and struggles to fully tune its music to the image. Last reproach, the film sins in its representation of the act of writing (although little shown in the film), exactly as On black roads earlier this year.

Verdict

Anyway, Stop lying is a feel good movie in half-tone, told with simplicity and conveying a beautiful message. Unfortunately, if he lacks a true alchemy and a visual leg to make it a memorable film, he remains more than honest and fits into a good adaptation of Besson's work. Stop lying

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
