Writer, actor, screenwriter, trumpeter, music critic, poet, singer, parolier... When one lists the multiple caps of Boris Vian one might think that one gives himself the pleasure of making an inventory at the Prévert. However, the French artist is today illustrated through a series of six heteroclite short films published together on DVD under the title Boris Vian makes his movie. The opportunity to share the universe of the old breaker so adept of the absurd and the visions of new emerging filmmakers... Six exciting shorts, let it decorate one by one below.

While his literary work is full of material to adapt for the cinema (his novels obviously but also a whole tripotée of news, including the great collection The Wolf-Gau), Boris Vian also gave himself the pleasure of writing scenarios grouped under the title Street lovely, where the short films described below came from. Sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, they offer a dive into the radically diverse styles of Boris Vian's work and universe.

The Autostopper

The opening of Julien Paolini's court is made on a strange misty pond, behind which one guesses the unpleasant grinning of a bicycle wheel that turns in the vacuum. A slow dezoom reveals the threatening grille of a Buick (the same mark as the icy Christine of King / Carpenter), where a couple watched with fear the body of the cyclist that they had just hacked. Terrorized at the idea of dealing with justice, they rush to hide the body in the trunk of the car to make it disappear further but an impromptu hitchhiker surprises them in full act...

Grinding, Autostopper is a short well-composed visually in its large frames, worn by its wide format particularly cinematic. A deliciously mysterious atmosphere glides on this court, supported by a ubiquitous fog (to bring closer to the hilarious news of Vian) Love is blind) and a well-chosen music. Thus, the strange ballet mixing power and class relations takes these characters into a clever game of cat and mouse, taking from end to end. Finally, like a cherry on the cake, the short ends on a credits worn by Vian's song Do me wrong, Johnny. that closes it in beauty.

What I'm interfering with

On a strange misunderstanding, a husband cuckolds a good shot and gets engaged as a butler in a castle... But if he thought he'd hit the jackpot by helping the chestnut on this one evening, his wife's arrival at the meal will fold all his cards and definitely make the evening turn vinegar.

Comédie de mœurs directed by Pablo Larcuen, who was mastered by a true social satire, What I'm interfering with searches as much as the previous short film the issues of class struggle. More potache, playing skillfully on tone breaks, there will be quite surprising and quite convincing projections of violence. Some sort of Parasite But made in France, written by the king of the absurd Boris Vian...

The Normandy Cowboy

A escaped horse, a woman who awaits her future husband at the local PMU, a marriage that is expected but not coming (or perhaps it is the opposite?), The Normandy Cowboy is a little candy that surprises not bad with the rest of the short films as much in its register as in its history.

A little poetic fable on a loveette in a provincial setting, the court of Clémence Madeleine – Pedrilla convinces by his casting in the hair and by his light tone, always flirting between humor and seriousness. A movie candy, to taste without moderation...

Sunflower Mechanics

From its particularly original and decapitating introduction, La Mechanique des Tournesols He'll be as poetic as his title. We follow Ernest, street manager, who after missing his bus finally finds himself trapped in a very mysterious psychoanalysis office...

A short made with ten hands – nothing but that! – by D-Albane Bisleau, Sarah El Karkouri, Valentine Gaffinel, Rokiatou Konaté and Marie Schnakenbourg, we are directly immersed in the author's tricky universe. Undoubtedly the short that is closest to Vian's best known adaptation to cinema – Day foam by Michel Gondry – Sunflower Mechanics He will constantly knit his strange, oppressive atmosphere and social discourse (especially on work), with absurd scenes absolutely irresistible. A sacred bet raised hand-in-hand, crossed with staging ideas and particularly well-worked executives. A nice crush...

Our Faust

Trio of women and trio actresses (Audrey Fleurot, Lou de Laâge, Alice Isaaz) to narrate this strange Faustian pact on the background of a history of upset love and body close by dance.

A short by Elsa Blayau and Chloé Larouchi that works particularly well by the alchemy that transpared between the three actresses mentioned above. A rereading of the Faustian myth put to the feminine, which brings interesting visions (the rapprochement of the bodies, the filming of desire) while remaining the court most anchored in the real of this selection.

Street of the lovely

During a report in a retirement home, a team from France 3 Regions met Gaston Lampion (Jacques Herlin). If at first sight the old man is not distinguished from the other residents, his story concerning an old rue du patelin, called Rue des Ravissantes, intrigues the two envoys of the television. What if Gaston was telling the truth on this old street that was hosting the prostitutes in town?

The longest selection (40 minutes), Street of the lovely adorned by a documentary filming. The image sounds true (not without sometimes appearing unhealthy), the actors are visibly not all professional,... All this at first glance gives a more basic, almost amateur bill to this short film. And that's where he pulls all his strength! Indeed, this blurring between pseudo-documentary images and the impression of caught on the alive brings a disturbing credibility to the turn towards the science fiction that the short film takes. Idiotful, funny and touching, Rue des Ravlantes explores the futuristic pan of Vian's work in a resolutely nostalgic vein.

Conclusion

Six shorts, six sometimes diametrically opposite visions and a single constancy: the crazy inventiveness of Boris Vian's Universe. Often funny, never boring, these shorts will be a real pleasure for the aficionados of the great man's literary work, just as they could create a very convenient entrance door to his writings, so accessible for the most neophytes. Boris Vian makes his movie

Drinking the Stephen Kings as the apricot syrup of my native country, I first discovered cinema through its (often bad) adaptations. I'm married to Mrs. Wilkes as much as a persistent Stockholm syndrome, I am gradually opening up to videoclub films and B-series peasers.Today, I wander between my favorite cinemas, film festivals and the edges of Helvetic lakes much less calm than they look.
