The programme of the 24th edition of the NIFFF Did we look so rich? Nothing's safer! Not to mention that your two MaG lascars are as brave as the sauna that had become the upper floor of the cinema Les Arcades at the beginning of the festival as the polar nights that followed at the Openair, renamed this year the Dark Hallsa. They even dared to accept the shady kisses that bloomed the brains of the mythical Robert, who dragged his carcass through the streets of Neuchâtel. And it's great to have challenged all these dangers that they give you hereafter a complete after-session, the ultimate proof of their passage into the fief of the fantastic Swiss. We assure you that you will enjoy reading these reports as much as we have had to discover this dense programming, decidedly eclectic and, let's say, particularly qualitative! In addition to these reviews, we have concocted seven interviews in total with a cavalry rhythm between sessions. By the time the full versions come out during the release of the films this winter, we will share excerpts on our networks. Long live the NIFFF!

The reverse of the decor
There is no good festival without positioning on the state of the world. And the NIFFF did not derogate from it at its closing ceremony. If the Annecy festival committed to supporting the Iranians. Following Israel's flash attack, the NIFFF, for its part, wanted to recall the progress of all-out fascism (see video below). An accelerated turn supported by the alliance of the terrible children of Silicon Valley and Capital, whose insolent weddings were warmly welcomed by the media affronted to the death ideology of the far right. During this edition, the selection reflected the concerns of our time with a much better cru than last year. Hope it lasts.
It is also impossible to ignore the backside of the decor, on a micro scale this time. First of all, thanks (again and always) to the NIFFF teams who worked hard to offer us the best production conditions for our interviews. A warm welcome and logistical support for an independent media like ours. We welcome the investment in press relations as many volunteers, despite organizational and managerial constraints which seem to have weighed heavily on employees. « Resignations, burn-out, mal-being at work » Titled the newspaper The Coast This week. A feeling of exhaustion that we were able to measure ourselves on site and a state of affairs unfortunately too frequent in the cultural environment to be accommodated. Pierre-Yves Walder, the general and artistic director of the NIFFF did not remain indifferent and he split his first apology with the local press explaining « to be sincerely sorry [he may have] hit some collaborators ». It is now hoped that the management of the festival will react accordingly during the next edition to give the best frame to the working ankles, without which the NIFFF would not exist.

For his first film, Kim Soo-jin offers a paranoid thriller obsessed with sound. At the heart of the story is a hearing impaired young woman, disturbed by strange noises that seem to be related to the unexplained disappearance of her sister. As she sinks into the corridors of her building in search of answers, an icy certainty gradually becomes necessary: these sounds are nothing natural...
With its mysterious "noise" story, the synopsis starts at first sight directly on the side of the awesome Memoria Weerasethakul. The Thai filmmaker had managed to mix metaphysical narrative and true moments of stubborn oppression, which played as never before with his sound-design to take his spectator away. In other words, the expectations were high... Noise is not a complete shipwreck (we remember trembling the terrible Toxic Daughter However, in the last year at the NIFFF, he struggled to pass the stage of shy entertainment, immediately seen, soon forgotten. By neglecting to develop his characters, Kim Soo-jin leaves us too quickly in his cascade of rebounds borrowing much (too much?) from effects already worn out up to the rope in the genre cinema. The tension, the sensuality of this narrative, which puts a great deal on the waterfall sound and the multiplication of the clichés add even more weight to this promising story at first glance. Not angry but disappointed...

Reflect in a dead diamond

Reflected in a black diamond, portrait of a dead diamond... one thing is for sure, we will have played with our feet and hands not to scratch the title of the last film by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani whose interview you will find on our Youtube channel. With its caleidoscopic narrative, this film pays tribute to the Fumetti neri the golden age of the films of spies. Taking the tone very first degrees of contemporary productions, Reflect in a dead diamond traces the troubled memories of an old man waiting for his destiny facing the sea. A ray of sun, a bitter, bare breasts and imaginary turbine at full speed to offer us so many hallucinated scenes.
With his improbable pass trick worthy of the Gadget Inspector, the old agent resounds his moments of glory, where the fight against crime is never far from the raw desire. A confusing film that savors itself by its formal attempts pushed to the extreme, even forgets some of its characters. Whatever, each fragment is savored like a regressive pan of our unconscious film. Portrait in a black diamond is an effervescent cocktail so close to the era comics that it is hardly surprising when thumbnails appear on the screen. A film to be reserved for lovers of the genre and which should certainly convince those who had fallen under the charm of the dark Diabolik.

A Useful Ghost

Full session forced, the mercury came up very quickly during the premiere of the film Useful Ghost Thai director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke. If we had been told that we would have fallen under the charm of a film where a ghost reincarnated as a vacuum cleaner is looking for at all costs to get in touch with her husband, we would certainly have believed in a new delirium tremens crisis. Much more than a black comedy, Useful Ghost is unclassifiable as he explores ever more unusual narrative axes, until he slips towards politics with remarkable elegance. The stories tangle and like a polyphonic tale, told by the dead and the living, Useful Ghost is a NIFFF favourite. If ghosts haunt us, it may be because they have something to remember about our past. A burning film that heals the still gruelling wounds of the bloody red shirt repression in 2010. Funny, sensitive, burning. Must be seen on August 25, 2025 during the French release.

Dangerous Animals

When a couple is invited on an Australian boat for a part of "shark cage diving", the owner of the lineer plans to feed the squales with these juicy tourists... When he goes looking for his next prey to take off to satisfy his deviant passion, he meets a young surfer (the hallucinating Hassie Harrison) that he soon embarks... But it will prove to be much tougher than expected.
If Dangerous Animals in the genre of shark films initiated by The Teeth of the Sea (but also a good bit of bouses), he has the audacity to completely dynamit the genre to offer his audience an ultra gripping entertainment (and not so stupid!). The feature film does not fall into the usual codes of the slasher (and its female victims quickly undressed and killed), nor in the one recently invested by Coralie Fargeat in Revenge with her heroine "mythologized" in an ultra-violent figure, mute and virilized with Rambo sauce... Dangerous Animals offers an intermediate path, with a clever and hargy protagonist who does not however turn to the archetype of cinematography virilization... And the same applies to bebeasts whose use goes rather in the opposite direction of what is generally found in highly marked narratives of this kind. In short, a very beautiful and entertaining surprise that should be discovered on a large screen (the film will soon be released in theaters)!

And if you met an alien who invited you to drink after your barmaid service, what would you say? From the first few minutes of the film, Touch me manage to catch the audience's attention during this session at the psychiatrist where Joey, a young, unworked woman, tells this unlikely third-type night blow. Queer film in all the noblest things, Touch me is a « ovnifff » that only the festival of Neuchâtel could dare program. Addison Heimann goes beyond the simple guignolesque comedy with a tricky mix of genres that were not expected with such a messy synopsis. The director we interviewed in Neuchâtel explained to us that he was strongly inspired by the Japanese films of the 60s and 70s and the entire colour palette of the Giallos.
One of the first erotic scenes is of all beauty and it wasn't a thin deal not to turn to the caricature of a bad Hentai from dark corners of the internet. Funny, the movie is just as much. We must see this charismatic alien at the crossroads of Jesus and a Kamel Ouali from Eastern Europe embark on a hip-hop choreography in purple overwear. Invited to the villa of this narcissus never far from the guru, Joey and his friend Craig will purge their common trauma unconventionally. If the fim is scattered at times sometimes forgetting its original guiding thread, it convinces by its uncomplicated approach and who dares to show scenes of tentacular sex. Proof is, we came out a little more open than we had entered. Do tentacles win you?

Bokshi

Anahita struggles to integrate into her high school. Yet his passion for history will train with a small group of students in the wake of Professor Shalini in search of an ancient site supposedly supernatural, lost in the middle of the forest. Where Bokshi We begin to feel his will to narrate a queer story within a conservative India, while imposing a carcan of Folk horror well infused narrative patterns of Midsommar. If the first shots flirt with the kitsch without perfectly setting foot there, the rest of the feature film will not hold the road and will spread into an endless tunnel of more than two hours twenty where unfortunately there is not much to save. Ultra cheap, poorly written characters and far too many, caricature history... The feature film completely dumps us and it is not its few fulgurances (including a few rather sympathetic drawing passages) that will save this viewing. The biggest plantade in this edition!

We have to see New Group Like a fable. A kafkaian fable, absurd, that doesn't forbid anything until the worst WTF... But if the feature film first appears to be deceitfully fun, it manages to raise and question a multitude of "automatic" behaviors, integrated and imposed by society, to question them (brightly enough) on the screen. Ultra-punk and cut to the bone (duration of 1h20), it sweats from the influence of the magaka Junji Itō with its strange creatures composed of human bodies... A (very) nice surprise!

Night Silence

A grandfather (Maciej Damiecki) left for the retirement home after finding that he was becoming too burdensome for his son. If he integrates fairly quickly into this microcosm of residents all more tricky than each other, he will also quickly discover that a secret is hidden in the basements of the establishment.
Horrific thriller as tender as touching, Night Silence testifies to a rise in rank in his director's career Bartosz Mr. Kowalski. Polish had already rewarded us with the ultra classic slasher Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight and here proves his attachment to the genre, although he digs a less frontal narrative, less inscribed in the codes, going rather to lorry on the side of the horror version Flanagan. Ultra licked in its special effects and in the design of its creatures, the film benefits from a twilight photograph tinted with a blue-greenish characterizing the rot that threatens each of the residents of this EHPAD. The themes are certainly heavy and should not be easy to wear by the ageing casting (the same remark made for the film). The Rule of Jenny Pen), but Kowalski manages never to be leadant and even to insert into his story real light and humorous touches. In short, a very beautiful film about the physical decrepitude and loss of his family...

After the medium film I saw the devil's faceJulia Kowalski continues her exploration of female emancipation in a universe surrounded by men. There we find Maria Wrobel whom we met at NIFFF. If there was an actress to remember from this selection 2025 Neuchâtel, it would be her! In the literal sense of the term, the young Polish is overwhelming. It was on the shoot that she learned French and slept on the spot on this remote French farm. She plays the role of Nawojka, a young woman who lives with her father and brothers on the family farm. When Sandra, the free and sulfurous neighbour, returns to the village, Nawokka sees her desires upset. A painful film, poignant and incarnate up to the bone. Maria Wrobel accepted a very personal role as she entrusted us to Neuchâtel.
May my will be done is an amazing dump that takes us where we never wait. Far from the too often agreed tropes of coming-of-ageThe film makes its own way to the apotheosis. As a necessary collective exorcism that does not leave unharmed. The captivating performance of Maria Wrobel will remain engraved in our memories, like that of Isabelle Adjani almost half a century ago already in the excellent Possession (1981). Release scheduled for November 19, 2025.

Gibier

Does a slasher hunter make a good slasher? When radical left activists return to search for the cameras they had hidden at the local slaughterhouse, the situation degenerates into a bloodbath with a local mayor determined to make disappear all those who get in the way of his road. If the film tries some political breakthroughs (too often carabinated), it is not well known whether it assumes its purpose perfectly. The counter-speech of deprecated hunters is equally present, which could lead to the thought that political activism is not useful, which would still be the case. Nevertheless, the film is a very good manhunt as we had not seen in the genre cinema for a long time, a fortiori French.
If one would have liked the political background to be more inclined towards a somewhat more subtle discourse than the harmful consequences of direct action and the use of violence, the film by Abel Ferry offers some memorable punches. Gibier has an icy side. Killings give us to see a mirror of the real as this shooting scene at close range in the face of a young man immediately disfigured. A mirror image of police repression against yellow vests. This plan, in which nothing is spared, reminds us of how the LBD's recourse to civil society is now sadly trivialized.

Obex

Already noticed at the Sundance Festival, Obex Albert Birney is a very personal work. At the same time director and actor of his own film, Albert Birney encamps the role of Conor, a young man re-enacted in his apartment. A lonely character, closer to computers than humans. « Soon we will live in machines, even dogs » He predicts. In the early 1990s, Obex The nostalgia of the past, that of the paper video game magazines that were coveted by the buralist and where each release of a new game was like the discovery of a treasure. To relax after a hard day of hard work, Conor sings alone in his bed in front of his 8-bit karaoke displayed on one of his monitors on his triple cathodic screen. The multitasking before the hour and which here gives this strange aspect to the film, as if the analog and digital worlds were juxtaposed.
While his dog (IRL as in fiction) is rushed into the game Obex which he has just received by post, Conor will do everything to recover his faithful companion. Obex's film par excellence shows a certain ingenuity to tell its story, all carried by a black and white photograph that reminds others of films like Testsuo For the eight-closing side, the glauque less. Obex Breathe in the good mood of strange morning and the naivety of old RPG. If you sometimes feel the limits of the device, Obex remains a curiosity to see, both touching and vibrant in sincerity.

Hotspring Sharkattack

A small Japanese village known for its hot springs is invaded by an army of bloody sharks. Yet, within the population, the response quickly organizes... Under his big fannyy air, Hotspring Sharkattack offers a real Japanese comedy, super entertaining and with stakhanovist rhythm. So yes, it's stupid like a shark (completely) hammer, it's tweaked with three bits of strings and it stands by a miracle that is hardly explained. Stop! The film was able to conquer the entire public of an open-air NIFFF decidedly hilarious in front of these sharks in naughty CGI and impressive (and well named) Maccho!

Cloud

Un jeune homme se fait beaucoup d’argent sur Internet grâce à une activité d’achat-revente bien peu regardante… Mais si son compte en banque se remplit, il se fait par la même occasion pas mal d’ennemis. Kiyoshi Kurosawa présentait dans les salles françaises ce Cloud en même temps qu’un moyen-métrage nommé Chime. De cette double sortie, le NIFFF n’a gardé que le long, en catégorie Third Kind vu qu’il aborde le “genre” par la tangente. Et malheureusement, c’est un demi-flop pour le cinéaste japonaise passé maître dans l’art de la tension… Si le début du film est prenant et que l’on sent enfler cette raideur si caractéristique de son cinéma, c’est pour l’évacuer (presque) totalement en un seul jumpscare… La fin – dont nous ne dévoilerons pas la nature – peine à convaincre tandis que l’écriture de l’unique personnage féminin pose question… Cloud, un projet fumeux qui peut au moins se targuer de sa sublime photographie.

The Ice Tower

La Tour de Glace repose en partie sur une relecture moderne du conte de The Snow Queen, conte d’Andersen qui est l’objet d’une adaptation cinématographique dans le film de Lucile Hadžihalilović. Ce long-métrage est d’abord porté par une photographie élégante, qui rappelle celle de La Femme de Tchaikovsky. L’image est un petit joyau de composition ; on a envie de glisser dans cette fugue artistique, où une jeune fille Jeanne se réfugie sur un plateau de tournage après avoir quitté un orphelinat sur les hauteurs de cette ville alpine. Elle y rencontre celle qui joue le rôle de la reine des glaces, Cristina, elle-même interprétée par Marion Colittard.
Malgré la prestation remarquable de la jeune Clara Pacini, le film nous a laissé sur le carreau avec le sentiment d’un bien beau diamant mais se cache un peu trop facilement derrière ses feux flamboyants. Certes Lucile Hadžihalilović peut se targuer de biens belles séquences, mais n’aurait-il pas fallu accorder un peu de chaleur au film ? Et pour cause, le film s’enfonce dans un exercice formel que ses contempteurs qualifieront très certainement de cinéma bourgeois. Kilian est sorti contrarié, pour ma part j’étais plus mesuré mais pas moins déçu d’avoir été si proche de toucher à quelque chose de plus intime et sensible. Reste un film à l’ambiance singulière qui laissera la part belle à l’interprétation pour ceux qui n’ont pas peur de la lenteur.

Opus

Véritable légende de la pop, Alfred Moretti (John Malkovich) disparait des radars pendant près de 30 ans. Cependant, il annonce un retour en grandes pompes pour un ultime album à un groupe de journalistes triés sur le volet, invités dans son ranch reclus pour découvrir ses dernières chansons en avant-première. Parmi les quelques happy few figure le nom d’Ariel, une jeune critique particulièrement intègre.
Cette nouvelle sortie A24 présentée au NIFFF propose un film multi-genre centré sur un John Malkovitch grimé en icône pop. Conglomérat de Prince, Freddie Mercury et David Bowie, il faudra attendre que son personnage prenne le micro pour la première fois pour qu’on cesse immédiatement d’y croire… Le plus gros hit de cette étoile internationale de la chanson serait un vieux morceau passé sous auto-thune ? Couleuvre décidément mal digeste, pour peu que l’on consente à l’avaler… Et malheureusement, ce n’est pas le seul reptile qu’Opus vous mettra sous la dent ! Difficile dès lors de ne pas abandonner toute suspension consentie d’incrédulité devant le film. Pire, à se perdre dans (beaucoup) trop de directions et de genres (comédie, thriller paranoïaque, horreur, film musical…), il finit par n’en maîtriser aucun. Et c’est bien dommage… Un maigre divertissement pour le studio A24, qui nous avait habitué à bien mieux.

Hallow Road

Un couple reçoit le téléphone de leur fille… Elle conduisait sous l’emprise de stupéfiants sur la route d’Hallow Road, à presque une heure du domicile familial, lorsqu’elle a percuté une gamine qui se promenait là. L’enfant git devant la voiture, inerte… Tout le film suivra la course des parents pour rejoindre leur fille, en temps réel et en n’offrant de la scène d’accident que sa restitution téléphonique. Procédé similaire à The Call (et probablement toute une tripotée de films s’inscrivant dans ce sous-genre du hors-champ constant), Hallow Road du réalisateur britannico-iranien Babak Anvari prend comme actrice principale la géniale Rosamund Pike. Toutefois, il est très difficile de parler du film sans le spoiler… Nous nous contenterons de dire que la tension est bel et bien au rendez-vous même si plusieurs facilités scénaristiques sortiront assurément le spectateur de son visionnage et de la bulle de stress qu’il construit. Bref, un thriller original, en demi-teinte.

U are the universe

Andriy, routier de l’espace, est en mission vers une lune de Jupiter lorsque la Terre explose. Il se prépare à devenir le dernier humain de l’univers lorsque sa radio grésille… Le cinéaste ukrainien Pavlo Ostrikov propose avec ce premier long un film de SF infusé de romance et d’humour. Alors ne nous mentons pas, si vous avez lu et vu quelques morceaux de science-fiction (au hasard, 2001 L’Odyssée de l’Espace), vous verrez approcher les virages scénaristiques de U are the Universe aussi clairement qu’un astéroïde de 100 mètres de longueur. Et pourtant, ce mariage savant de Kubrick et de Desireless tourné dans d’impressionnants décors transportent facilement son spectateur à travers ce joli petit récit… Pour preuve : le film a remporté le prix de la jeunesse ainsi que le prix du public lors de la dernière édition du NIFFF !

Redux Redux

Irene Kelly se met en tête de parcourir les multivers pour tuer toutes les versions du meurtrier de sa fille… Offrir un film de multivers original alors que Marvel a lessivé le concept, voilà le pari relevé haut la main par les frères McManus. Alors oui, Redux Redux suit des voies scénaristiques toutes tracées et peinera à nous surprendre tout à fait. Mais avec sa photographie canon et le jusqu’au-boutisme de ses scènes de violence, ce long-métrage proposé dans la catégorie Ultra Movie du NIFFF saura se montrer super divertissant et épicé d’un humour grinçant jamais gratuit. Un revenge-movie prenant et enragé qui aura su secouer le festival.

Orang Ikan
Singapour | Release date : NC | Implementation : Mike Wiluan | International competition
1942. Un prisonnier nippon et un soldat britannique s’échouent sur une île, une chaîne reliant leurs chevilles. Contraint à cohabiter, ils vont découvrir que ce bout de terre émergé est le repaire d’une mythique créature. Relecture de l’Étrange Créature du lac noir dans un contexte de guerre mondiale, Mike Wiluan propose un film de monstre décidément rétro. En optant pour le man in suit pour incarner sa créature, il fait le pari des effets purement pratiques. C’est parfois kitsch, souvent gore et diablement divertissant ! Un choix audacieux à l’ère du tout numérique, qui offre un beau moment d’action et de frousse dans la moiteur de cette jungle impénétrable…

The Thing with Feathers

Un jeune père de deux enfants, dessinateur professionnel, perd sa femme. Un soir, peu après sa mort, un corbeau géant pénètre dans sa chambre… The Thing with Feathers tente de métaphoriser le deuil à travers le prisme du monstrueux — une idée déjà brillamment (et bien mieux) exploitée par Juan Antonio Bayona dans Minutes after midnight. Si le long-métrage, adaptation du roman de Max Porter, tient globalement la route, elle souffre d’une durée mal calibrée et d’un chapitre central intitulé “Démon” franchement dispensable. Le design de la créature impressionne, et la performance de Benedict Cumberbatch — sobre, intense — relève nettement l’ensemble. Hélas, le film manque cruellement d’audace : jamais assez radical pour marquer durablement, trop timide dans son recours à la grammaire horrifique pour bousculer. Touchant par moments, il saura sans doute émouvoir… mais sera tout aussi vite oublié. Un film passable — et au fond, dispensable.

Se retrouver coincé dans les couloirs aseptisés d’une station de métro, voilà le cauchemar de base de cet Exit 8. Le personnage devra ensuite, dans un jeu morbide, trouver chaque anomalie (comprenez changement de décor) pour passer à l’étage supérieur, jusqu’à sortir de l’étrange piège énigmatique.
Extrait d’un jeu vidéo éponyme que le film adapte assez fidèlement, Exit 8 est un pur film concept qui amène sur grand-écran la notion d’espace liminaire. Issus d’Internet, ces endroits charrient autant une familiarité déroutante qu’un profond malaise, deux adjectifs qui s’accolent volontiers à ce thriller paranoïaque et horrifique. Malgré une narration forcément redondante, le spectacle nous tient, la tension monte à chaque tour d’un cran et finalement accouche d’une œuvre qui est peut-être l’une des meilleures adaptations de jeu-vidéo sur grand écran de ces dernières années.

Gatillero

Autre film fauché par excellence, Gatillero nous vient tout droit d’Argentine. Signé Cristian Tapia Marchiori, Gunman de son nom anglais est porté par un unique plan séquence. D’un braquage de bras cassé dans un quartier aux mains des cartes, le film bascule dans une fuite en avant jonchée de cadavre. On suit les fraques d’un beau parleur empêtré dans une affaire de règlements de compte qui va se solder par une authentique boucherie comme les cartels savent y faire.
C’est audacieux et plutôt efficace malgré le peu de fonds disponibles. Malheureusement, même si le film n’est pas foncièrement long, il aurait gagné à adopter la forme d’un moyen métrage. Certains dialogues bienveillants semblent sortis de nulle part, ce qui fait un peu tâche au milieu des fusillades. Reste un film sans le sou qui déploie toutes les astuces pour nous faire croire à ce bain de sang devenu viral.

The Home

Adaptation du roman éponyme de Mats Strandberg, The Home est réalisé par le suédois Mattias J Skoglund. « Je voulais créer un ton qui serait très brut, intime et légèrement étrange » explique Mattias J Skoglund. Et pour cause, le résultat est réussi, d’autant plus pour un deuxième long-métrage. L’histoire se déroule dans une maison de retraite angoissante (euphémisme), théâtre toujours efficace pour un film d’horreur. Alors que sa mère est rattrapée par la sénilité, son fils Joel doit se résoudre à la laisser dans ce service long séjour, où ses occupants rappellent ceux du film de Jack Nicholson. Au-delà de la seule question de la fin de vie, The Home montre combien le cocon familial réplique les traumatismes de génération en génération. Avec The Home, Mattias J Skoglund aborde droit dans les yeux les violences familiales qui hantent les victimes. Certes un peu trop convenu dans sa conclusion, le film présente des qualités sincères qui le distinguent de d’autres films du genre au même cadre.

Eddington

Après trois films enracinés dans le folklore horrifique, son nouveau long métrage s’éloigne des sentiers de l’effroi : Aster brosse le portrait d’une Amérique fracturée qui ne sait plus comment gérer l’altérité. Le réalisateur vedette d’A24 va d’abord noyer le spectateur dans un déluge de propos complotistes de personnages en manque d’attention ne sachant plus qui croire, ni qui suivre. Du maire charismatique (Pedro Pascal) au gentil shérif looser pathétique (Joachim Phoenix), chacun cherche à prendre le rôle de leader. Derrière ces petits écrans qui ont colonisé notre quotidien, on croit voir des prêcheurs de sectes concurrentes jouer des coudes pour contrôler la ville. Joachin Phoenix continue d’explorer les nuances du pathétique avec un personnage ordinaire catapulté dans la frénésie du monde.

The only trait of union is paranoia. Eddington, quoiqu’un peu trop bavard, pose néanmoins la seule question qui vaille encore aujourd’hui : plongé dans un état de stupéfaction permanente, comment réussir à reprendre le contrôle d’un présent à toute allure ? Sur le modèle du western où la tension grimpe jusqu’à ce que la poudre à canon remplace les invectives, Eddington ou plutôt America is afraid est à voir en salle dès maintenant.

Sasyq

Un SDF, en ratant son suicide, découvre l’existence d’un étrange extraterrestre qu’il va tenter d’aider à rejoindre sa planète… Comédie kazakhe de Yerden Telemissov, le film surprend pour son humour tranché, son travail visuel qui le place mille lieues devant la plupart des comédies françaises à plusieurs millions de budget et pour la construction de personnages tous plus hilarants les uns que les autres. Si la dramaturgie suit un déroulé relativement classique et qu’elle peinera à dérouter un spectateur habitué à ce genre de récits, elle proposera une critique du régime kazakh assez virulente et plusieurs moments réellement poignants. Une véritable petite pépite de cette compétition internationale du NIFFF et la preuve, après Steppenwolf, de la vitalité du cinéma made in Kazakhstan.

Sirāt

Inspiré du pont Sirāt qui, dans la tradition islamique, devient de plus en plus étroit jusqu’à séparer l’enfer du paradis, le film du cinéaste franco-espagnol emprunte autant à Mad Max than Salary of fear. Authentique fuite en avant avec pour unique consigne de ne jamais s’arrêter, la trajectoire de Sirāt est rectiligne. Road movie initiatique, le film démarre par une folle séquence donnant à voir les premiers instants d’une rave party qui ne s’arrêtera jamais vraiment. Confondant de réalisme, on se fond dans la masse, comme si on était nous-même happé par ce technival qui a bien eu lieu pendant trois jours non-stop. Sergi Lopez que nous avons rencontré nous a expliqué qu’il avait fallu se fondre dans la masse. C’était au tournage de s’adapter à la rave et non l’inverse. Sirāt est une expérience totale.
On suit donc ce père joué par Sergi Lopez s’engager aux côtés de son fils dans un périple pour retrouver sa fille ainée, disparue dans une rave party aux portes du Sahara. On glisse avec eux dans un univers où la chute est un processus constant. On est sorti engourdi de la projection, comme habité par le sentiment d’un effondrement qui n’est plus à venir, mais depuis longtemps à nos trousses. Stupéfiant au sens littéral du terme. C’était déjà notre coup de cœur à Cannes et on ne doute pas qu’il s’agira d’un des meilleurs films de 2025. Il fallait voir la tête des festivaliers à la sortie de la projection du film pour se convaincre du potentiel explosif de Sirāt. Sortie prévue le 3 septembre 2025, une date à marquer dans votre agenda et au marqueur (indélébile) s’il vous plaît !

The Ugly Stepsister

Elvira veut à tout prix conquérir le cœur du prince, malheureusement elle ne répond pas aux critères de beauté en vigueur dans le royaume… Sa mère, qui fleure dans ce potentiel mariage un sacré jackpot, se met en tête de l’aider à conquérir cette beauté tant désirée. Relecture du conte de Cinderella mais du point de vue de la “méchante” demi-soeur (si l’on suit le corpus imposé par Disney), The Ugly Stepsister de la réalisatrice norvégienne Emilie Blichfeldt propose un conte parfaitement désaxé. Du canevas de base, elle retournera tout : elle injecte du pulp dans le genre poussiéreux du film en costume, de l’ultra-gore (parfois à peine soutenable) dans l’imagerie imprégnée par la vision Disney et une bonne dose de sexe dans ce qui devrait être un conte de fées. Le tout nous parvient sous une forme qui n’est pas sans rappeler The Substance, avec un même amour du monstrueux et un discours féministe encore plus puissant. Une très belle surprise !

Carrie

C’était l’un des autres moments forts du NIFFF. Découvrir Carrie en plein air a été un réel choc. Malgré le demi-siècle qui nous sépare et qui fera oublier au jeune public combien la société américaine est pétrie par la religion, le film est toujours marqué par une violence psychologique exceptionnelle. Carrie White suffoque dès les premières minutes du film lors de cette séquence au ralenti où les corps des adolescentes se dénudent sans ombrage ni pudeur et où ses camarades vont lui faire vivre le martyr alors qu’elle découvre ses premières règles. Eduquée dans un cadre puritain extrême et malmenée par une mère implacable, Carrie n’a aucun espace et ses espoirs seront très vite douchés par ses pairs ou plutôt ses tortionnaires. Le sang des premières menstruations jusqu’à l’éruption d’hémoglobine finale. Le viol de l’enfance sans doute le plus cruel du septième Art. Carrie aura donné naissance à toute une génération de films sur la cruauté infantile de The Innocents to The Plague. Un classique intemporel.
